Field Notes Essay

The subculture I chose was the game Dead by Daylight which is a multiplayer horror game where 4 survivors face off against 1 killer.  I interviewed my friend Gilligan who plays the game Dead by Daylight extensively. The focus of the game is that you try to get as many things as you can done and survive at the same time.  Every Map is different in Dead by Daylight, so every map has a different play style that each killer and survivor must conform to or be a little influenced by how they play.

Gilligan told me a while back to get the App called Discord, so we could better communicate, he showed me a feature where you can screen share and so I observed Gilligan that way.  The Map that Gilligan was on was called Father Campbell’s Chapel which has a large chapel in the middle of the Map and inside that chapel has an upstairs and a downstairs floor, outside the chapel is a very wide misty plain that has some broken parts of brick walls of where buildings use to be and at the far end of the map there is an old abandoned carnival area.  On Saturday 4/13/19 at 11:45 I observed Gilligan play as the survivor Ace but Gilligan put on the Perk No Mither on, where he starts off injured so this means he can only take 1 hit instead of the normal 2 hits to get downed but the Perk No Mither allows him not to leave pools of blood, hides grunts of pain by 50% and grants him the power to recover from being in the dying state multiple times.  This Perk No Mither has more of a down side to it since it attracts killers to go after you specifically because your easier to catch and kill because they just need to hit you once and your downed. At 11:45 Gilligan found a generator and started to work on it, he found out that the killer Nurse has the Perk called Hex: Ruin, a common Perk that many killers like to add on since it slows down survivors progression on all generators that are affected by penalties if you do not get the Great Skill Check your generator will go back in progression.  Gilligan didn’t want to deal with fixing a generator with this perk and went to find the totem which contains the Perk Hex: Ruin. He found the totem after a little while of wandering around the map and began to cleanse the totem to get rid of the Hex: Ruin. Gilligan cleansed the totem making the Perk Hex: Ruin inactive, giving all survivors the benefit of working on generators without penalties. At 11:46 Gilligan was found by the killer who was playing the Nurse, the killer Nurse is the slowest killer in the game Dead by Daylight but has the power to blink/teleport.  The Nurse is considered the most overpowered killer if you know how to time her blinks/teleports right. However, for every blink/teleport she uses she enters a fatigued stage where she must stand still and catch her breath before she can move again. Gilligan tries to run away from the Nurse, but she quickly catches up to him and downs him. Gilligan told me “watch me Kobe” as he tried to struggle off the hook the Nurse hung him on. Kobeing, is a term that refers to struggling off the hook in an attempt to escape if you don’t want to wait for other survivors to save you or if survivors are unable to save you, however you only get 3 struggle attempts and every struggle attempt that you fail it moves you faster to the second stage of the hook which means if you reach the second stage and get hooked again you will not be able to get rescued and automatically die.

The struggle attempt is a 4% chance that you’ll escape and most of the time you’ll end up hastening the progression to stage 2. Gilligan to my surprise got off the hook after 1 attempt of trying to struggle off, he was screaming and yelling shouting “did you see that?!” as he started to run away where he was hooked. At 11:47 he found another generator and started to work on it, but the Nurse found him and began to chase after him, Gilligan somehow manages to lose her and hides in a locker in the Killer Shack. The Killer Shack is a small house that has a basement where 4 hooks are located, it is the most difficult place to rescue a survivor because there is only one entrance to get inside and out the basement. At 11:49 another survivor got hooked and Gilligan is making his way there to save them, but he gets seen by the Nurse and is getting chased by her, he looks backwards to see when she’s going to blink/teleport so than he could avoid her attack but sadly he gets hit and hung again.  At 11:50 Gilligan gets rescued by another survivor but as soon as he’s rescued by another survivor he gets attacked by the Nurse once again, however Gilligan has the Perk Decisive Strike and stabs the Nurse making his escape however the Nurse is right behind him and catches him hanging Gilligan for the 3rd time making the Entity come and retrieve his dead body.
