Interview

My Interview subject Gilligan is an expert on my subculture Dead by Daylight.  Gilligan is much more experienced than me when it comes down to the game play mechanics and surviving as a survivor since he knows how to look backwards as a survivor.  Sadly, many new players don’t know how to look backwards and never learn how. Gilligan also knows how to loop a killer by running the killer around obstacles, which many new playing survivors don’t do since they think in a regular mindset of just trying to run away from the killer and not run in circles around objects.  Gilligan also has mastered the skill of 360ing giving him a way of dodging the killers attack, a skill that takes time and practice to pull off which many new survivors and experienced survivors struggle doing.  He’s also a pro at flashlight and pallet saves which is a very hard thing to do as a survivor because you need to time when you’re going to blind the killer when they’re picking up the survivor and know the right time to drop down the pallet to stun the killer. I asked Gilligan when did he start playing the game Dead by Daylight? His response was “I started playing in April 2017” (Gilligan).  I looked up when the game was released and found out that the game was released in June 2016.  I asked Gilligan when did he begin using outside App communications in the game Dead by Daylight? He told me that he’s used outside App communication in other games he’s played before he played the game Dead by Daylight, so he just carried over that habit into this game.  I noted down something that he told me “I only use Discord because Skype is trash” (Gilligan).  From what Gilligan said about the comparison of voice quality it sounds like using the communication App Discord is much better than Skype.  I asked him if he trusted the people he was communicating with and he said “no” making me ask “why?” because I thought he did.  He started to explain to me why by saying that “they never do anything” making me ask “but what about if the people did do something?” he responded back to me by saying “they’re ok, but then the killer ends up tunneling them” (Gilligan).  Gilligan also played survive with friends ever since he started the game, I asked him “how? Did you randomly friend people?” making him say “no, they’ve been my friends since Gary’s Mod or they randomly friended me.” (Gilligan).  Gary’s Mod is another video game that has a multiplayer platform.  He told me that his friends who he played with in the game Gary’s Mod joined him in playing Dead by Daylight, survive with friends.  I asked Gilligan “how many hours did you play the game Dead by Daylight?” he told me to “wait a moment” because he was checking his Steam profile to see how many hours he played the game and told me “682 hours” making me say “wow” back to him.  Those hours are just the total amount of hours he’s played on the game, so I wanted to ask him “how many hours do you play a day?” getting the response “I dunno it depends.” Wanting to push on the question even further I asked, “is there a day where you like to play Dead by Daylight longer than others?” hearing him say “yeah on the weekends, since I don’t have school.” (Gilligan).  I asked him “What are the benefits of being so experienced in both fields of being survivor and killer?” his answer was “mind gaming people” confusing me so I asked what did he mean by mind gaming people, he started to explain to me that “when your playing the killer you have to think like a survivor, where would I go and hide?” (Gilligan).  I moved onto the next question asking him “what are some things that cannot be obtained now but could when you played it?” His immediate answer was “the clothing Legacy” than proceeded to explain to me what that is.  “it’s like a limited time clothing item that you can only get when you prestige” (Gilligan).  In all my game play in Dead by Daylight I’ve only seen 1 person with Legacy clothing.  Gilligan sadly doesn’t have any Legacy clothing which was disappointing to hear.  The last question I asked him was “What would be some insider tips and tricks you’d be willing to tell new players who join the game?” and hearing his response of “nothing” making me ask “why?” thinking he would at least give someone a bit of advice or help.  “because they gotta learn for themselves, I can’t tell them what to do.” (Gilligan).  Making sense that if Gilligan did give out advice in the game than the new playing players playing survivors or killers wouldn’t have earned the knowledge of obtaining it from long hours of game play.
